Future Proof

A pest control project was implemented at the Wairakei Natural Thermal Valley in February 2020 targeting rats, stoats, ferrets, weasels, hedgehogs and possums with the use of A12, A24 and DOC 200 traps. (Courtesy of the Small Scale Community Innitiative Fund / Waikato Regional Council and with advise from professional trapper Jason Day and support and guidance from Robyn Ellis of Predator Free Taupo. All of which we are most thankful for.)

The Valley is home to many species of native bird life and rare thermal tolerant plants. The aim of the project is to achieve a decline in pest numbers, in turn aiding the birdlife, flora and invertebrates to survive and thrive into the future.

Traps are strategically placed aproximately 100m apart on a 1 kilometre line. These are checked in accordance with best practice with regard given to public safety through the use of non toxic bates and lures. The intention is to develop the trap line over time within an overall 5 kilometre radius.

The project is a small investment into the future.
